AI-Powered Microcredential Design Methodology

Based on Angela Westmoreland's 2023 proposal for integrating AI into microcredential pathway development at FTCC.

Application 1: Develop the Pathway

1
Identify Programs
Select certification programs that will award microcredentials. FTCC has identified Industrial Systems and Medical Lab Tech.
2
Determine Skills
Use AI to identify skills eligible for microcredentialing. AI suggests possibilities; narrow to 1-2 skills initially.
3
Design Assessment Options
Prompt AI to provide options for how students could demonstrate mastery of selected skills.
4
Create Rubrics
Select assessment option and prompt AI to generate a rubric (e.g., single-point) for evaluation.
5
Set Score Criteria
Establish score(s) required for a student to earn the microcredential (e.g., "meets expectations").

Application 2: Evaluate for Mastery

1
Draft Sample Submissions
Prompt AI to create sample student submissions that effectively address each rubric criterion.
2
Compare & Contrast
AI compares actual student submissions to samples, providing detailed feedback for improvement.
3
Score Submission
AI suggests scores based on rubric application. Human reviews and adjusts as needed.
4
Review AI Evaluation
Instructor reviews AI analysis and suggested score, always acting ethically and responsibly.
5
Share Feedback & Issue Badge
Copy feedback to LMS. If criteria met, issue digital badge via Credly platform.

Why AI-Assisted Design?

  • Time Savings: AI generates relevant, usable results in seconds
  • Consistency: Standardized evaluation criteria across programs
  • Objectivity: Reduces bias in mastery evaluation
  • Scalability: Supports rapid expansion of credential offerings

"Using AI is a LOT faster than developing all of this information independently. The longest part is determining your prompt!" - Angela Westmoreland, 2023
